This cuckoo has perhaps the most famous bird call in the world. This guy has been letting people know the time since the invention of the clock and also brings music to the spring air here in the Himalayas. Despite its melodious call, the cuckoo belongs to a family that is notorious for brood parasitism and has been known to employ tactics ranging fron subterfuge, camouflage to extortion. But what is not generally known is that some species of this family can actually be beneficial to the nesting success of the host family. This happens because there are some cuckoo fledglings that secrete a rather pugnacious susbtance when held. Thus, if a predator were to attack a nest having one of these fledgling, it would be repelled, hence increasing the chances of survival of the entire brood.
