Imagine you are in the middle of the Colosseum and the walls are not 150 but 10,000 feet high and are made of rock, ice and snow. There you have it, that is what it is like to be at the Annapurna Base Camp. We think the base camp should be marked with a “Caution: Jaw Drop Ahead” sign at least during the full moons. And it has an approach to match. The trail goes through the heartland of the Gurungs who make a sizeable portion of the fearsome Gurkhas. It might come as a bit of a surprise to find them so friendly and peaceful, but look around; who wouldn’t be happy in such a tranquil landscape? If you are lucky, you might even get to see an audacious honey hunt in a precarious cliff side. The trail also passes through the most rewarding hawk watch site in Nepal and the rhododendrons are something to write home about. In short, you will love it!!

Where you need it, when you need it
While crossing paths with a Snow Leopard or celebrating the drunken revelry of Yartung during a trek might seem like serendipity, there is a time and place for everything. And we have cracked the code. Enter Placecards. It is an early warning system for such memorable crossings and since it is sensitive to both time and place, you will only be getting information relevant to the ‘Now’ and ‘Here’. Everybody knows the big things, but you will have the eye for things that can create a one of a kind trek.
What is that mountain??
If this doesn’t earn you bragging rights nothing will. With our Mountain Finder you will know the name of every other white pyramid in the horizon. While just names would suffice to impress most, take it to another level with stories of mountains that swallow people and other tidbits. For best effect, make sure you don’t tell anybody about this feature or the app and of course don’t pull your phone out during the show.
Does this lodge have Wi-Fi?
Don’t waste too much of your vacation time on mundane things like choosing a place to crash. We have comprehensive coverage of all lodges, yes you heard that right, along with their facilities and prices. You will even know in advance which lodges make you crouch in the loo. Public Service Announcement: Please contribute five seconds to rate the lodges you stay in even if you don’t write a full review.
This app comes fully equipped with Hopkins trained medical personnel, SAS team for rescue operations and a couple of Black Hawks in standby. You know if we could, we would. But the best we can do is be suggestive. And we hope we have been as annoying and intrusive as possible in this front. We hope you curse the app when it annoys you with the fact that you have climbed too much for the day or are entering avalanche prone area. But we also hope that these intrusions will keep you on the safe side. If it reminds you of your mother, we would say we have succeeded. We also have comprehensive information in case of an emergency, but let’s not get into that now.
It is nothing fancy, but it serves the purpose. The links in the content can take you to the map and the icons in the map can take you to the content. Gompas, lodges, rivers and mountains are all fair game. But no contours though. And believe us you won’t miss it. It isn’t exactly uncharted territory we are talking about here.
Isn’t this supposed to be a guidebook?
Don’t worry; trail descriptions, attractions and other usual suspects you find in a guidebook are all there. But that's a given right? And just like a guidebook, everything we have is completely offline!!
