DESCRIPTION

Lying in the majestic Langtang region, Gosaikunda trek is a spectacular short trek that will take you to the land of 108 lakes. On this trek, you will find yourself walking through the forests of Rhododendron, oak and birch at first, and enjoying the scenic panorama of the mountains like Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and Hiuchuli once the treeline ends. The ultimate highlight of the trek is the gorgeous Gosaikunda lake, a perfect blend holy and beauty. It not just attracts religious Hindus, Buddhists and Shamans, but also trekkers who seek Himalayan wonders. Neighbouring it, are like Surya kunda, Naag kunda and Bhairav kunda. Gosaikunda lights up during Janai Purnima festival (the full moon of August) as several Hindus worshipping Lord Shiva take a pilgrimage to dip in in this sacred lake and wash away their sins, while Shamans perform a exotic spiritual dance. Besides, be prepared to be welcome by diverse flora and fauna along the trails, taste some cheese and exchange smiles with the hospitable Tamang locals in the area.

Getting to Dhunche: This is where your trek will start from. The little town of Dhunche (capital of Rasuwa district) is easily accessible by the roads from Kathmandu. It will take you around 6-7 hours to reach there by bus.

Accommodation: The lodges have well maintained facilities and decent food options. You will find tea houses all along the trail. But mind the time of Janai Purnima, when a lot of flock in the area as finding accommodation can be a problem in that particular time of the year.

Trails and Risk: The trek is a moderate one with some steep uphill climbs, narrow trails. The trails are well marked and you will not get lost. Altitude isn’t a great problem (unless you fly directly from Helicopter) but taking necessary precautions should be good. In Deep winter (Jan/ Feb), the trails can be slippery due to snowfall so watch out.

Alternative Routes: While returning, you can exit through Sundarijal. From Gosaikunda, the route goes as: Gosaikunda - Ghopte - Tuksang - Chisapani - Sundarijal and drive back to Kathmandu.
