Nuthatches climb around tree trunks and branches digging for insects. In that way they are much like miniature woodpeckers. Actually, there are lots of other physical features common between woodpeckers and the nuthatches that assist them in a life of hammering and climbing trees. They however do not descend from a common ancestor. The nuthatches perhaps have an edge over woodpeckers in that they can climb down a tree head first!! They also have a habit of plastering their nest entrance with mud, perhaps to discourage predators from entering.
