The way to identify these stoats is by looking at its fur color and the way they maneuver. Their fur color is chestnut brown in summer and completely white in winter except for the black tips of their tail. The reason the fur changes colour in winter is because the fur becomes thicker to tackle the cold climate. And it is during the winter seasons they are called Ermine or as being "in ermine". Stoats have a good sense of sight, smell and hearing, which they use to hunt. The stoat is capable of killing much larger animals than itself. Stoats are largely carnivorous and their primary food source is the rabbit, despite being many times its own weight, supplemented with small rodents, hares and birds. It also eats insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. And they are fond of surplus killing. They store excess food for later consumption; you must have certainly heard of the ant story. These guys kill their prey with a bite to the back of the neck and may travel as far as 8 km for a hunt. They can also move at speeds of 20 miles per hour when hunting. In addition to these natural skills, they are very agile and good climbers which mean they can climb trees and take young birds from their nest. They are also really good swimmers. The stoats are territorial and quite intolerant of others in its range, especially others of the same sex. They typically use several dens which are used from prey species. They also like to travel alone except during breeding season.
