The Common Kestrel is perhaps the most well known of the raptors having a distribution almost as wide as Black Kites. In Nepal they can be found from the lowlands barely 200 meter above sea level to 5,000 meter above sea level. No matter how low or how high they live, they are always partial to open country where they hunt through their characteristic hovering flight. A unique characteristic of these birds is that their vision extends to the near ultraviolet part of the spectrum which allows them to see the urine trail of voles, shrews and mice. They also exhibit marked sexual dimorphism. In the picture the left one the the male while the right one that is hovering is the female.
