Phu is a village that takes you back in time. From a distance, it looks as
though it has been carved out from the hills behind it with the stone
buildings almost being camouflaged by the cliff. The houses are built with
rock and timber with mud plasters though there are now a few modern houses.
The Tashi Lakhang monastery, about 30 minutes from the village, is one of the
oldest in the region and was famous for the edict by the late Rimpoche or head
monk who on request by the villagers only accepted to stay back if they
promised that the village would ban alcohol and tobacco. To this day,
consumption of tobacco is forbidden while the cold couldn't keep the alcohol
away.
