Pangboche is an idyllic village and its roots go back to the time of Lama
Sanga Dorje, the patron saint of Khumbu. Supposedly established by Lama Sanga
Dorje himself, the gompa here is one of the oldest in Khumbu and has some
interesting relics. Also local folklore insists that the old juniper trees
around the village emanated from the Lama's hair!!
If you are walking to Phortse from here, you will go past prime Tahr habitat
and will be surprised at how tame they are. This stretch is one of our
personal favorites. The traffic is low, the views are stunning and the
wildlife is amazing.
