  • 1,902 meters

How can Nagarkot be described? A hub for vacation goers? A stop for trekking lovers? A home for tranquil lovers? Well, in a nutshell, Nagarkot is a popular destination that many people visit to stretch their arms wide and relax in front of the rising and the setting sun. It is also best known for the splendid panoramic view it provides of not only the hills of the Kathmandu valley but also of the great Himalayan range (including 8848 Mt. Everest peak! if the weather's right). Look outside your window from your cozy hotel room or reach the top of the historic view tower, just make sure you look at the sky before the sun glares at you! The Himalayas and the hills slowly come in the limelight as the red sun peeps through the sky and turns into a golden treasure - and this very sight has won hearts of many. Hence, you see Nagarkot on every person's Bucket List. The place's popularity is best explained by the ample number of lodges and the ample number of visitors you will find here everyday! Rewinding back, Nagarkot has been always a preferred place for splendid views. The royal families and their royal guests came here occasionally at their summer retreat to witness the great Himalayas and the golden sun. In fact, long ago, Nagarkot, due to the unobstructed view it provides, used to be a strategic spot where army forts stood to keep an eye on neighboring kingdoms. Hence, it is called Nagarkot which literally means 'City Fort'. To add more to the views Nagarkot offers, it is said that even Lord Manjushree chose to stand atop this place to view the valley and pick the right spot to cut a gorge! Hm, Nagarkot must be the best spot in Kathmandu to view the sun, valley and the peaks!
