Jamacho peak, also known by the name of Vindhya Mountain, lies at the
northwest of Kathmandu Valley inside the Nagarjun National Park. Whichever
hiking route you decide to take, this peak which faces south will be your
ultimate destination. Just as your tedious hike gets over, you will be able to
refresh your body, mind, and soul with the overwhelming view of the peak and
the attractions you will find here. There is also a small stall that sells
packet foods that serve best to your growling stomach. Moreover, a small
picnic spot over here with the crisp wind would be a perfect place to tackle
your hunger.
A Nepali fair called 'The Jamacho Mela' or 'Balaju 22 dhara Mela' is held over
here in the month of March/April during the full moon day between Holi and
Buddha Jayanti. In olden days, it was often believed that by bathing in the 22
taps that are located in Balaju, all sins would be wiped clean. Thus cleansed,
people would then hike all the way to Jamacho to be a part of this interesting
fair. Give it a shot, and let us know if you feel any different.
It is also said that Tibetans would bring the frontal bone of the skull of
their deceased relatives over here, throw it high in the air and then bury it
in the ground ensuring salvation for the deceased. Now, a bright white stupa
has been built over the spot of burial.
