Sherpas Won’t Serve as Guide or Porter on Mount Everest Anymore

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa “We climb mountains so that our children don’t have to." This statement seems to be motivating the Sherpa of Khumbu region but now, recently, they have decided to stop serving as guide or porter to the climbers of Mt. Everest. “It was not easy to decide but we want our late parents’ dream come true” said, Tashi Sherpa. Another Sherpa added “We send our children schools so that we can see them as doctor or engineer not as guide or porter.”

Many events back in the history suggests this decision was to be made sooner or later by Sherpas. Sherpas have lost their life, guiding to Everest from the very beginning.  Sometimes in the avalanche, sometimes while saving others and sometimes just because something went wrong. In April, 2014 a devastating avalanche killed at least 13 Sherpa on Mount Everest. There have been many other such incidents, where death the of dozen Sherpa people were in news.

Sherpas had been threatening to boycott if Nepal’s Government doesn’t provide more insurance money and financial aid for victims. But there has been no any steps that would secure the Sherpa community of the Everest Region. “In our old age we don’t want to hear our young and educated son died in an avalanche,” said Nawang Sherpa.

Due to consciousness of Sherpa People about the existence of their people in long run and a feeling that there should be change in their occupation, they have decided to stop serving the climbers of Mount Everest as guide or porter. What they are planning to do for their livelihood is still a big question.
