Frequently Asked Questions

SAFETY FAQ

Trekkers in Khumbu Glacier, Everest Base Camp
Trekkers in Khumbu Glacier, Everest Base Camp

What is the status of Covid-19 in the Everest Region?

As for Nov 1, 2020, there have been 10 cases of Covid-19 in the Khumbu Region and 1 death. A 72 hour negative PCR Report is mandatory to keep both the local community and travelers safe. Also, the fact that flights are the only way in and Summit Air is strongly committed to safety protocols laid out by CAAN and WHO, further reduce the spread of infection.

How do the locals feel about travelers coming into the Everest Region?

The reception is mixed. As with any other place, there are advocates for closing down, and then there are those want to see gradual opening with safety protocols in place. After the first case of COVID-19 was found in Namche, flights were shut for a few days, and mass testing was done in Namche. After the results showed only 9 asymptomatic cases, flights were resumed again. The fear response that followed the cases also led to panic closing of bridges, hotels and trails. However, right now the local authorities are going in the direction of gradually opening up with safety protocols in place.

How much will the PCR test cost, and how can I do it?

If you go to the lab, the PCR Test is going to cost NPR 2,000 while for Home PCR Tests it costs NPR 3,000-4,000. We work exclusively with Central Diagnostic Laboratory for all of our PCR Tests. As an A-grade Diagnostic Lab in Nepal and one of the few that used 3-gene testing for Covid-19, CDL is above a lot of controversies and false outcomes that plague a lot of other labs.

As per a recent ruling Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality is only accepting PCR Reports from government hospitals, Star Hospital, HAMS, and B&B Hospital.

Is the Everest Base Camp Trek dangerous?

While treks in the Everest region pose some difficulties, most reasonably fit people can take on the Everest Base Camp trek. However, do read up on the most common challenges, Acute Mountain Sickness, and Environmental hazards.

As such, guides are highly recommended, especially if you are tackling the high passes. We will go through these things in detail during the mandatory trek briefing. We have also added extra days in the itinerary to reduce the chances of AMS during the trek. For example, between Dingboche and Lobuche we have added an extra day at Thukla even though Thukla is only 2 hours from Dingboche. Also, on the way to Gokyo, we have put two days at Machhermo.

Given that Nepalis do not have access to travel insurance with search and rescue, it is up to all of us to minimize risks as we travel and enjoy the high mountains.

Will I need to get travel insurance?

Travel Insurance is highly recommended. We are in talks with insurance companies to provide a reasonably priced policy for high altitude trekking.

What will happen if I need to be evacuated?

We will collect emergency contact information for each trekker during trek briefing. In case, you need to be evacuated, we can arrange a helicopter to pick you up from Kathmandu once the payment for the helicopter company has been secured from your emergency contact. It will usually cost around NPR 3,00,000.

However, please note that while we have taken utmost precautions to keep you safe, and will do everything in our power to keep you safe, at the end we are not liable for your personal safety.
