Ever wondered where do the major rivers of the Kathmandu Valley originate
from, and why are they called so? Well, they arise from the huge Shivapuri
Nagarjun National Park and are named after the assets associated near the
river source.
Same goes for the Bishnumati River of Kathmandu Valley. Although the sight and
the smell of this river are intolerable in the city area, the river is really
beautiful at the source. The place of the source is known as Bishnudwar, where
'Bishnu' refers to 'the protector' and 'dwar' refers to 'the opening'. It has
been named so due to the presence of a small Bishnu Temple called
Bishnupaduka, located near the source of this holy river.
In Hinduism, Lord Bishnu is the God who protects the universe from all
dangers. He is revered by all Hindu people and one can find many devotees
taking a dip near the river banks or even at the source of this river during
any auspicious festivals or occasions. For Instance, Baishakh 1, the starting
of Nepali New Year, serves as an auspicious occasion for pilgrims to visit
Bishnudwar and Baghdwar and worship the associated Gods at these sources.
While, in Buddhism, the third form of Buddha, Krakucchanda, allowed the waters
of Bagmati to flow had blessed his disciples saying that wherever their hair
fell, a spring would form. It is said that all those springs combined to form
the second major river of the valley Bishnumati, also known as Kesavati. Due
to this history, one would find many statues of Lord Buddha at Bishnupaduka.
Along with its religious importance, Bishnudwar adds immense beauty to its
surrounding nature as well. Its water is crystal clear, passing down in the
form of gentle waterfalls. The moss enclosed stones and bridges formed by
narrow logs certainly introduce you to a slippery adventure. Sit down on those
bridges and watch the water flowing underneath. The cool breeze and the
echoing sound of the river is no wonder unique and calming. Take a break here.
Take a palmful of water and sip it in. Believe, the Protector God will keep
your intestines safe and sound!
