Dhaulagiri , whose name is white mountain, has the bragging rights of being the seventh highest mountain of the world. It has four pyramid like peaks, in addition to the main summit. High pases and sweeping snow clad vistas seem to challenge the trekkers who would love to go on a off-beat trek. In 1950, before knocking off the first eight thousander peak .ie. Annapurna I, Maurice Herzog and his team tried conquering Dhaulagiri and made several reconnaissance trips to judge the possibility of a successful climb. Finally after several trips and meetings they decided Dhaulagiri was unclimbable and shifted their attention to Annapurna I. But 10 years later in 1960 Dhaulagiri was finally conquered by a Swiss/Austrian/Polish team led by Max Eiselin with the help of 'Yeti', a Pilatus porter airplane piloted by the famous Emil Wick. Emil Wick and Yeti still holds the record for the highest takeoff and landing ever which was achieved at the Dhaulagiri icefall at 5700 m. Flights ferrying expedition supplies were flown to the icefall and Emil being the eccentric man he was, instead of returning empty handed to Pokhara returned with big chunks of ice to cool their beers. Pokhara in those didn't have electricity but Emile and his friends surely didn't mind it that much!
