Also known as Asian palm civet it is a black or blackish-brown civet with long coarse hair. Its underwool is whitish or a rich yellow which is hidden in the heavier winter coat. The coat generally shows a pattern of longitudinal stripes on the back and spots on the flanks, shoulders, and thighs. The limbs, however, are always black or dark brown. What's most distinct is its facial markings; the usual pattern is a white patch or spot below the eye (sometimes above it) and one on each side of the nose. This civet is more common in well- wooded regions and is found living in trees, lying curled up by day among the branches or in a hole in the trunk. They are mostly found near towns or villages. They have adapted themselves to the life in human settlements, even in the heart of the crowded cities, settling on rooftops, an outhouse or drain as a place of hiding. Clever little troublemakers!
