To the southwest of the massif lies Annapurna South. It needn't need a guess work to explain exactly why it is named south but why name it south instead of just 'Annapurna V' following similar patterns of naming other Annapurnas is questionable. Seen from the south, Annapurna South is one of the most impressive peaks of the Annapurna Range. It towers 5000 m above Modi Khola valley and blocks the view of Annapurna I. Seen from the west Annapurna South looks like a beautiful pyramid. Many Nepalese also refer to this mountain as Annapurna Dakshin. Dakshin translates to south in Nepali dialect. The first team to climb the South was a Japanese expedition via the North ridge in 1964.
