A very primitive and traditional method of making butter is still in practice in some parts of the Himalayas. The basic idea of making butter is to separate the moisture from the milk by churning and many shepherds use yak skins for this purpose. Yak skin (most probably from the belly region) is sewed to form a bag. Then milk is poured into it and the butter maker swings it to and fro. This action goes on for quite a long time until the milk reaches the right consistency. Yak skin used to make yak butter may not sound right to some but we forgot to mention, only dead yaks are used to make the container. Yaks aren't killed for the sole purpose of making the container.
