The Victoria Cross is the highest decoration a soldier fighting under the Union Jack can receive. Established in 1856 by Queen Victoria, only 1,355 men have had the privilege of pinning one of these on their chest. Given the number of conflicts and casualties that UK has been through since 1856, 1,355 is an infinitesimal number. Of these, 13 of them were Nepali soldiers serving in the Gurkha Regiments, while another 13 were non-Nepali officers serving with the famous Gurkhas. It might perhaps come as no surprise that the Gurkhas Regiments are one of the most heavily decorated Commonwealth Regiments. And the Gurungs have had their share of servicemen and Victoria Crosses.
