Tilicho peak lies to the southwest of Tilicho lake. The lake is named after the peak because the water that makes the spectacular glacial lake belongs to the beautiful Tilicho peak. It was in 1950 that Tilicho peak came out of its hideout and became known to the world through Maurice Herzog. Herzog and his team were looking to conquer the Annapurna I (the first of the eight- thousander to be conquered) when he came across the Tilicho peak. In fact, he was so awestruck by the big wall of ice and rocks just beside the big lake which he aptly named "The Great Barrier". Later, the highest point in the great barrier was named Tilicho peak. Tilicho peak is the peak that links the Nilgiri mountain and Khangsar Kang/ Roc Noir together. Basically, these three mountains run across the same ridge. The first successful ascent of this peak was made by a French expedition led by Emanuel Schutz in the year 1978. They started their climb from the northwest shoulder of the mountain. Mountaineers rate this mountain as a technical climb and hence in the hard category. However, for a nonmountaineer, the closest you can get to Tilicho peak is the Tilicho lake. The Tilicho lake trek is more popular as a side trip included in the Annapurna circuit trek and is amazing. From the vicinity of the Tilicho lake, the Tilicho peak will appear right next to you; you can literally touch it. Though it does not have the distinction of being in the elite eight thousand club it does have a beautiful lake beside it to be proud of.
