This is a fairly common resident of tropical and subtropical lowlands up to elevations of 2600m. This species is found in rusty brown color on the side of its face, head, thigh and flanks. Its belly is white and its beak is long and decurved in shape. This bird feeds mostly in small groups foraging the forest floor for insect, grubs and seeds during which its scimitar beaks come in very handy. It is heard that these species are quite noisy and have a mellow fluty whistle.
