The Rodhi Ghar is a quintessential Gurung institution, in which young unmarried boys and girls could come together for nightly social gatherings under the guardianship of an adult. Through socialization and entertainment in a rodhi ghar, close friendships would form which served a very functional purpose of creating strong working units. Unlike similar institutions in various other cultures, there would be very little sexual activity. And even when there was, it would be rather discreet. While such an institution seems natural in this age, in many ways it was way ahead of its time. Surprisingly, this custom is almost dead because of the influence of Hinduism, which sees such pre-marital social interaction as immoral. The closest thing you will see will be a cultural program organized by the village mother's group to raise funds for its activities. If you are in a large group, you should consider funding such a gathering perhaps at Chhomrong. It will not only make your day but will also bring in the funds for trail maintenance or other activities.
