This is a beautifully patterned butterfly whose wings are an inspiration for designers. The underside wings of males are orange with two white stripes vertically passing through. If you examine closely then one of these white stripes has a smiley face. And the outer side is deep orange with black bordering all around. At the base of its hindwings, three or more dots are seen. Compared to the male, the outer side of female is dark with grayish- white area near the abdomen and thorax. And on the underside is silver with the same two stripes as in male. Both male and female have sharp-toothed wings. These insects are seen to search rigorously from flower to flower for nectar since early morning. If the temperature is willing to be warm then we find them basking in the sun with their wings fully widespread.
