Purkung Himal is a part of the bigger Damodar Himal and is best viewed from Thorung High camp. Thorung High camp that lies on the way to Thorung-La in the Annapurna circuit has a viewpoint from where the view of mountains is absolutely stunning. Purkung is seen towards the north from the camp. Purkung Himal is also spelled Purkhang or Purkang. Many names of mountains and places have changed over the passage of time mostly because of foreign researchers who find it hard to pronounce the names the way it is supposed to be pronounced in the local dialect. Once it gets printed in maps and books the new tweaked name catches on. The name Purkang makes more sense as "Kang" means mountain in Tibetan dialect. Anyways, Purkang along with Purbung, Jinjang and Yakawa Kang are very close and are the sources of the mighty Marshyangdi river that you have been following for a few days now. Purkung Himal was first climbed by a Japanese group fairly recently in August 2004.
