The name, "Numbur" was given by the Old Sherpas of a valley in lower Solukhumbu. The Old Sherpas were very proud of the mountain Numbur. The word, Numbur, means "the milk giving breast". The Old Sherpas of the Solu valley believed that the mountain is an eternal source of milk for the Solu people. So, the young Sherpas now tend to snigger and nudge with each other when the mountain, Numbur is mentioned. However, if we think it through, it kinda makes sense as there is this glacial lake, called Dudhkunda, which means, "The pond of milk" which is one of the biggest water resource for lower solu. Also, the surroundings of Numbur is full of grasslands which Sherpa's have been depending on from generations to graze their cattle. The first ascent of Numbur was done in 14 October 1981 by french mountaineers Jean-Pierre Henry, Christian Rathat and Mingma Sherpa from Nepal. Considered as a holy mountain for Sherpas, it is yet to be popular amongst mountaineers.
