Lama Sanga Dorje is considered to be the patron saint of Khumbu. Some state that he flew to Khumbu from Tibet while others maintain that he was born in Mong village in Khumbu. Whatever his origins, he was the guy that reignited the dormant fires of Buddhism in Khumbu by establishing the first of the monasteries at Pangboche, Thame and Gumela. As with all legendary figures, he is credited with magical powers which included flying and utilising the rays of the sun for subsistence. And when he died his body is said to have been evaporated into a rainbow with only his heart, eyes and tongue remaining. They are supposedly kept in a silver casket at Pangboche monastery. He is also supposed to have left the imprints of his hands and feet on rocks at Pangboche and Tengboche.
