The futuristically made Italian Research Center is the symbol of an association and a project with an equally futuristic sounding name: Ev-K2-CNR. The project was initially undertaken to re-measure the heights of Everest and K2 using GPS technology. Hence the name: Ev-K2-CNR. CNR here stands for Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche or National Research Council. However the research scope of this station has widened considerably since its inauguration in 1990.
