Horses have been an integral part of the Tibetan and Himalaya landscape not only as a fast means of transportation, way to run warfare but also as a companion and status symbol. With the advent of the motor road and vehicles, the allure of these noble beasts has taken a nosedive. And while there aren't as many horses in Manang and Mustang as in the past, there is still a good population. This can be seen during the annual festivals of Yartung during which horse acrobatics and races are held. There is also the curious culture of the people from Mustang getting off their horses on steep downhill sections. While horses are not at their when they need to go downhill, the culture isn't present everywhere else. For example, in Dolpo and even in most part of Tibet, there is no such culture. This perhaps shows the love the people of Mustang have towards their horses? There is also a saying in Mustang on what a horse says to its rider, "I will watch out for you when we climb, you need to watch out for me when we descend and when the flat lands come let's run like there is tomorrow."
