Hiunchuli and Mardi Himal, like faithful soldiers guard the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Hiuchuli lies in Annapurna range; considered sacred by Gurung ethnics it is one of the three major trekking peaks. Although classified as a trekking peak it is considered most difficult because of difficulties in route finding and dangers of avalanches and rock falling which is why most mountaineers seem to avoid this Himal. It is an extension of the Annapurna South towards the southeast. It was first climbed in October 1971 by an expedition led by U.S Peace Corps volunteer Craig Anderson.
