The most important feature of a Gurung man's clothes is the Bhagra, a kind of sack bag worn criss-cross across the chest. And today even when the men do not wear other traditional items like the loincloth (kachad), shirt (bhoto), waistcoat (istakot), cap (dhaka topi) or the cloth cummerbund (patuka), the Bhagra is still sported proudly even when the rest of the attire is western. An interesting fact about the Bhagra is that it would originally be made from a kind of nettle. As for the women, they would traditionally wear velvet blouse (makhamal ko cholo) and pleated long skirts (lungi mugiya) with a cloth cummenbund (patuka) to wrap both pieces. Over this they have a velvet cloak (pachauri) worn across the left shoulder. A head cloth and various kinds of necklace and bangles completes the costume.
