Before it was found to be the highest mountain on earth, she went by the name of Peak 15 among surveyors and as Chomolongma (The Mother Goddess) among Tibetans and Sherpas. After it was found to be the highest peak on earth in 1852, it was named Everest in honor of the Head of Survey of India, Sir George Everest. As you must very well know it was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. What you might not know is that the May 29 ascent happened only days prior to Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and was announced that very day in Great Britain. Must have been one of the greatest gifts the monarch has received till date.
