Altitude: 6,966 m (22,854 ft) Some people say that Dorje Lakpa is named after a Sherpa who helped an expedition to climb the Mountain Dorje Lakpa. However, the myths have different stories. There is a sculpture called "Dorje" or "Vajra," interpreted in Buddhism. It looks like the number 8 is laid horizontal. Buddhism says that they fell from the Heavens onto earth. You can see one in Swayambhunath as well. Sherpas say that the mountain, Dorje Lakpa, is a mountain of thousands of those Dorje's covered in snow. Imagine! Another myth says that the name Dorje Lakpa comes from a demon called Dorje Lekpa. During the 8th century, Guru Padmasambhava-- a Tibetan god-- turned evildoers in the Tibet into Buddhas through his teachings. And, Dorje Lekpa was one of the demons who later became a disciple of Padmasambhava. Dorje Lekpa rides on a snow lion and brings protection wherever he goes. Now, Dorje Lekpa protects the Mountain Dorje Lakpa. The name, Dorje Lekpa, changed to Dorje Lakpa with time.
