Doko is simply a Nepali rucksack. Made from cane bamboo splits, a doko is the ideal way to carry loads in the precarious terrain of Nepal. The tapering shape ensures that most of the load is at the top which makes it easier on the back. By the way, that is exactly how you should be packing your rucksack too: lighter stuffs on the bottom and heavier ones on the top. Give it a shot. You can thank us later. Secondly, the fact that a doko is carried on the head ensures that the load can be jettisoned off quickly in case of a fall. And that is perfect given the precarious trails of Nepal. Porters also carry a T-shaped stick while carrying a particularly heavy load. This comes in handy not only as a walking stick but a support for the load during breathers. And its all locally produced and bio-degradable!!
