Demoiselle cranes are one of the most beautiful cranes in the world and are mostly a passage migrant in Nepal. And what a migration do these guys undergo! They battle the Himalayas and the strong winds to escape the harsh winters of their breeding ground in Central Asia into the relatively warm Indian Peninsula. They undertake the migration in huge flocks and they are very vocal, and a flock passing overhead is quite an amazing sight. These birds have small round head, black neck and a distinct white plume of soft hair behind each eye. Demoiselle cranes are the smallest of crane species that are famous for their elaborate communication methods and spectacular dancing that is of vital importance to attract a dame. Once a pair is formed it turns out they tend to stick together for life.
