There are four Chulus in the Chulu mountain range, they are Chulu West (6419m), Chulu Central (6584m), Chulu East (6429m) and Chulu Far East (6058m). All of these mountains belong to the bigger Damodar Himal and are classified as climbing peaks by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) which means anyone who has moderate mountaineering experience and skills will be able to climb these mountains. As the name of the mountains suggests, the one to the extreme left of the range is Chulu West (closest to the Thorung-La). The one to the right of Chulu West is Chulu Central, followed by Chulu East and then lastly, Chulu Far East. There has been some confusion regarding which peak is which. Let it be clear that there are four peaks in the Chulu range. In some websites, you will find that Chulu West is considered as Chulu Central and in some cases, Chulu East is considered as Chulu Central. The truth lies in the numbers, the height of these peaks. Always check for the height if you need to confirm which mountain is which. The Chulu Central is the highest of all the Chulus. Chulu West (6419m) is the one to the extreme west and closest to the Thorung- la. It is roughly 160m shorter than Chulu Central. Chulu East (6429m) sits right next to the Chulu Central and is roughly 150m shorter than the Central. It was first climbed by a German expedition group in the year 1955 via the north east ridge. Chulu Far East (6058m) lies to the extreme east of the Chulu range and is the easiest of the four peaks to climb. But the views from up here are as good as from other Chulu peaks. The spectacular views of the Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak will be very tempting and will make you forget the excruciating pain and lesser oxygen. Chulu Central (6584m)is the highest peak in the Chulu range and most difficult to conquer amongst the four Chulus. The difficulty didn't bother the Japanese however as they were the first to ascend this peak in 1952. But given the fact that Chulu Central is classified as a climbing peak it should have been easy.
