Butter-lamps are hourglasses like structures with alluring gold, silver, and bronze carvings that you will find nearly in every Tibetan temple. While its upper part is filled with butter up to the rim followed by a tiny butter- coated cotton thread on top, the lower part is slightly narrower making it easier to hold while offering prayers. The purpose of these butter- lamps can be traced back to the Buddhist religion of Tibet. The followers of this atavistic religion offered butter-lamps on behalf their deceased loved ones for their liberation in the Bardo, the state of existence between death and rebirth. While it isn't clear whether these lamps excite the change of five elements (earth, water, fire, wind, sky), but they do aid meditation, dissipate the darkness of unconsciousness, and give rise to wisdom and purity in oneself. When lightened, one can perfectly feel the blend of peace and awakening mind. So how about offering one and understanding the principles of the divine nature?
