This is a not a very shy woodpecker and easy to spot. Its abdomen region is white striped with black marks. And its back is white with black spots. As with most woodpeckers, unlike the females, the males have red crown. Their nest is a hole in a trunk of a tree or a large bough. However, the insides are rather skimpily lined.
