Symbrenthia niphanda, generally called jesters, is a butterfly genus in the Nymphalidae family having 14 species, found locally in Nepal and flying across Kashmir and Kumaon to Sikkim and Assam. The male species carry orange and females more extensive yellow markings, having seven black coastal spots in the under-fore-wing in both. Adults are usually seen singly or in groups along narrow trails of the forest glades, with male often mud-puddling in areas of dappled sunlight. The pointed forewing tips and toothed hind-wings of the blue tail jester distinguish them from the common lascar.
