Praken

Perched on the rocks, this gompa is built inside a cliff to the north of Manang and is primarily a meditation cave for the villagers. This gompa used to be famous as the residence of the famous '100 Rupee baba' (baba means monk in English). He would provide blessings for safe passage to the trekkers for the Thorung pass and in return, trekkers would donate Rs. 100 to him. Even though there isn't a baba or blessings anymore, it is still a good idea to visit this gompa for the fantastic view of the Annapurna range and Gangapurna among many others. It will also prove to be a very good acclimatization exercise. To get there, turn to the right near the big Black Juniper tree in Manang and simply follow the trail. You will reach Praken Gompa in about 2 hours. Altitude: 3836m Lunch pack: not necessary
