Ghale Fort could either be a side trip from Gyaru or you could visit this abandoned fort on your way to Ngawal as it lies just beside the trekking trail. Either way, this ruined fort will make you imagine the eventful past that the fort holds. Immediately after exiting through the Kani at Ghyaru you will walk past a water mill and 15 minutes into the trail you will take a sharp turn to your left. Climb the steps and exit the gate made of stacked stones. After exiting the gate and turning right along the trail you should see the ruined fort. You will see an abandoned, crumbled fort sitting on an edge of a cliff with a red and yellow flag hovering over into the wide gorge made by Marshyangdi river. This abandoned fort once used to be occupied by the powerful Khe rajas or Ghale kings of the Nyeshang valley. The Khes came down from the North (Tibet) and ruled the Nyeshang valley before the rajas (kings) of Lamjung about eight hundred years ago. The Ghales were a famous royal family that maintained a strong hold over Manang in the late Medieval Age. If you talk to the locals of Gyaru about this beautiful ruin then you will hear stories of how they would fight with other Ghale armies just across the Marshyangdi river.
