The Thukchamba Gumba, a small Nyingmapa sect monastery at the northern end of town, used to be a Kani, which is an archway that protects the town from evil spirits as well as offers salvation from sins to those that walk under it. Yes, walk under it. The gompa is literally right above the path that people walk on. The difference between all the kanis that you see in the Annapurna Circuit and this one is that this one is also a gompa while all the other Kanis only had a stupa on top.
