The first gompa upon entering the Muktinath temple complex is Samba Gompa. It lies on the left immediately after entering the Muktinath premise. It used to be the residence of the Muktinath Lamas and at the left of the temple there are still some rooms that shelter female nuns. The original gompa was built by Lama Sangdo at the end of the nineteenth century and was reconstructed in 1981 by the villagers of Khingar and Jharkot. Old villagers from Jharkot still remember the lama dances that were held in front of this gompa. At present, it seems the gompa has lost its magic touch.
