Jhong (also spelled Dzong) is the leading village on the northern side of Jhong Khola, where there is a ruined fort dominating the north side of the valley. The town of Jhong is one and a half hours from Muktinath and is built on the ruins of a fort called Rab Rgyasl Rtse (meaning peak of supreme victory). The chief of this fort once used to control all of Muktinath Valley. And it is said that the kings of Jhong later settled down in Jharkot seeing the advantages of the fertile land of Jharkot. Since the only means of transport were horses, crossing the Jhong river when the flow was big used to be difficult. So they shifted to Jharkot. The ruins of the fort are still majestic and photogenic and worth a visit. Also, when you are here take a look at the east, for you will see a spectacular view of the Thorong-la. Trust us, if you are here after crossing the Thorung-la and see the view that you see, you will definitely feel proud of yourself.
