The houses of Chhyongur are old school. They are not painted with modern rain proof expensive paints or anything fancy, rather stripes of white, red, blue, yellow and green can be seen painted in these age old houses. This practise is not to make the house cool or colorful but rather because of an important connection with the Sakyapa sect of Buddhism. The main colors of Sakya Buddhists are white: associated with Buddha Vairocana and purity, red: associated with Buddha Amitabha and lifeforce, blue: associated with Akshobhya Buddha and wisdom, yellow: associated with Buddha Ratrasambhava and renunciation and green: associated with Buddha Amoghasiddhi and harmony. All the 5 colours are naturally available in the outskirts of Chhyongur which is another logical reason for why these colours are used. Normally those walls attached with the prayer rooms of a house is painted with the five colours. These colourful houses gives the village a unique character. We are quite sure even Picasso himself would appreciate the beauty of the coloured houses of Chhyongur.
