To reach this cave, you should climb some stairs that diverge from the main trail. Walk on the dominant trail for about 25 minutes from the Bungalow Crossroad. And then, to your right, you will find a flight of stairs diverging from the dirt road. Take the stairs and Voila! You reach the Cave of Buffalo Buddha. Here, Hanuman, the Monkey God, is said to have brought some sand from the sacred Vulture Peak at Bihar. But more on this later. The Buffalo Buddha Cave is the cave in which a Buffalo herder meditated and turned himself into a real Buffalo thousands of years ago. The cave looks like it has a door and a window like opening in the top. While meditating, the Buffalo herder grew horns which stuck to the rock of the caves. Perhaps this explains why there are so many holes in the rocks. ;)This cave is also known as the Cave of Black Buddha, the Cave of Mahe Buddha, and the Cave of Buddha Makhya. The legend goes like this. Thousands of years earlier, a buffalo herdsman of Kathmandu came to Acharya Nagarjuna frequently to offer curd and milk. Nagarjuna Pad Acharya was an Indian Philosopher who meditated in the forest of Nagarjun hill and discovered many gods. He died in a cave where he meditated. Hence, the name of the hill is Nagarjun. The Buffalo herdsman told Nagarjuna to give up the forest and come down to the town. But, Nagarjuna refused and asked the herdsman to meditate in the forest instead. Then, the herdsman did as he was told. Because of his obsession with the Buffaloes, he could not think of anything else but the Buffaloes. So, he turned into one. Then, Nagarjuna guided him to think emptiness. And, he slowly became normal. After the meditation, he became more alert and sharp. And, it is said that he shot up through the roof of the cave and went to the heaven. Legend also says that Hanuman brought soil from Vulture Peak-- Buddha's pure land in Bihar, India-- to the Cave of Buffalo Buddha.
