Just behind the main Temple of Muktinath are 108 waterspouts that dispense water from the Kali Gandaki River through boar shaped water spout openings. Pilgrims from different parts of Nepal and India consider taking a bath in these spouts as a sacred act for the removal of all sins. Since Muktinath is a temple revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, the number 108 has significance in both the religions. There are, for example, 108 books in the Tibetan Buddhist scriptures and 108 beads on the Buddhist rosary. Looking from the Hindu side of things, Muktinath is one of the 108 divya desams (premium places) of the available 108 considered sacred by Shri Vaishnava sect (a sect devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu). The sacred water that flows denotes all sacred Pushkarini waters from all 108 Sri Vaishnava Divya Desams. And did we forget to mention that one of the avatars of Vishnu is a boar?
