PHUNGI TENGA - By the Milky River

  • 3,315 meters

Phunki Tenga beside the Dudh Koshi River is a good spot for Himalayan Griffons which nest in cliffs further up along the Dudh Koshi. It is also a good two hours climb up to Tengboche from here so it makes sense to fill up and/or get some refreshments. Just past the bridge built by Peace Corps volunteers, there is an Army checkpoint. Look out for pheasants and musk deer during the steep climb to Tengboche.

If you aren't feeling too well because of the altitude, you should perhaps consider sleeping it off here, as Phungi Tenga is as low as it gets past Namche.
